NCIDQ Education & Work Essentials
The following options and flexible eligibility structure allows candidates from different educational backgrounds to pursue certification

Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree in Interior Design
Degree from CIDA- or non-CIDA-accredited program requires:
- A minimum of 60 semester interior design credit hours
- Complete 3,520 work hours (approximately 2 years full-time) of experience
Degree in another major
You must also complete an interior design certificate, degree, or diploma with at least:
- 60 semester credit hours
- Complete 5,280 work hours (or 3 years full-time) of experience.
Associate degree or certificate in Interior Design
Degree or diploma in Interior design from any institution requires:
- 60 semester credit hours
- Complete 5,280 work hours (or 3 years full-time) of experience.
Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree in Architecture
This can be from ANY institution, NCARB/CACB or not. It requires:
- Complete 7,040 work hours (or 4 years full-time) of experience
- This path is also for anyone with education outside of North America

-In all cases, work experience must be verified by a direct supervisor or sponsor.
-Up to 1,760 of the hours listed above can be earned prior to graduation.

What academic background is required for NCIDQ eligibility?
Candidates must have completed a degree in interior design or a closely related field, ideally from an accredited institution, although this is not essential
Are there alternative education routes to qualify for NCIDQ?
Yes, combinations of education and professional experience may satisfy eligibility criteria under specific conditions. This path is called Alternative Review Program, or ARP.
How can I verify if my degree meets NCIDQ standards?
Check that your program is accredited by recognized bodies such as CIDA to ensure it qualifies for NCIDQ certification. Otherwise, the best way to assess whether or not your education meets minimum requirements is to contact CIDQ.org directly.
